Synerquest’s HR Manager Ms. Aidel de Leon, OHNAP’s 56th Annual Convention Plenary Speaker on Proactive Compliance Through Workplace Audits: A Nurse-Led Framework
September 17, 2026, Pasig City - During the 56th Annual Convention and 76th Foundation Anniversary of the Occupational Health Nurses Association of the Philippines (OHNAP), held on September 17–18, 2026, at Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, Ms. Aidel N. de Leon, RN, DOLE Accredited OSH Practitioner and Synerquest Management Consultancy Services Inc. HR Manager, delivered a plenary talk entitled “Proactive Compliance Through Workplace Audits: A Nurse-Led Framework.”
Ms. de Leon's presentation highlighted the importance of moving beyond simply meeting occupational safety and health (OSH) requirements toward proactively identifying workplace risks, evaluating the effectiveness of safety programs, and preventing work-related illnesses and injuries. She introduced the NURSE framework (Navigate the Standards, Understand Health Signals and Workplace Risks, Review the Evidence, Speak with Workers, and Evaluate the Controls or Program) as a practical approach that occupational health nurses can use to strengthen workplace audits. The framework emphasizes how nurses can draw on their clinical knowledge, health surveillance records, workplace observations, and conversations with workers to identify potential hazards and assess whether existing workplace controls are truly effective.
The presentation emphasized that compliance is not just about having policies, completing training, or maintaining documentation; it is about making workplaces safer and healthier for employees. By looking beyond completed requirements and examining actual workplace conditions and health outcomes, occupational health nurses can help organizations identify gaps, strengthen preventive measures, and foster a stronger culture of safety and health. The NURSE framework also offers practical guidance for newly licensed nurses, those transitioning into occupational health from other industries, and nurses seeking to expand their role in creating safer and healthier workplaces. Ultimately, proactive workplace audits are not merely about passing an inspection; they are about ensuring that compliance translates into real protection, improved employee well-being, and safer workplaces for everyone.

The magnitude 7.8 Earthquake in Southern Mindanao
June 8, 2026 - The issue was not simply the magnitude 7.8 earthquake itself, but the apparent prevalence of substandard construction practices in many buildings and structures across the Philippines—even in highly urbanized areas such as Metro Manila or NCR.
Following the July 16, 1990 Central Luzon Earthquake, significant revisions were made to the National Structural Code and related building regulations to improve the earthquake resilience of structures. Buildings are expected to be designed and constructed to withstand strong seismic events (up to 8.4 magnitude) and, more importantly, to protect lives during such disasters.
In a major earthquake, it is expected that non-structural components such as glass panels may shatter, ceilings may collapse, and cabinets or fixtures may topple. However, the primary structural system should remain stable enough to prevent catastrophic collapse and allow occupants to evacuate safely.
Seeing the extent of the damage in some areas is both heartbreaking and alarming. It raises important questions about the quality of construction, compliance with building standards, inspection processes, and enforcement of regulations.
Looking back, what if the earthquake had struck at noon, when offices, schools, malls, and other buildings were filled with people? The consequences could have been far more tragic.
Natural disasters cannot be prevented, but the loss of lives due to unsafe and poorly constructed buildings can and should be prevented.
The real lesson is not only to prepare for earthquakes but also to ensure that buildings are designed, constructed, inspected, and maintained in accordance with established safety standards.
Have we truly learned the lessons from past disasters? That is a question we must all reflect on.
